Lake Erie Crushers News Release

Evansville, IN -After using a seven-run inning to power past Evansville on Friday evening, the Crushers found that turnabout was not fair play on Saturday. The Otters used a six-run fifth inning to beat the Crushers by the final of 7-4 at Bosse Field.

Lake Erie got off to a good start as they scored a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Brad Griffiths to take an early 1-0 lead. The Crushers would add to their lead in the fourth inning as Arden McWilliams scored on a passed ball by Evansville catcher Frank Meade, then Tyler Johnson brought home Griffiths on a sacrifice fly to give Lake Erie a 3-0 lead.

Right-hander Cristobal Mata, making a spot start for the Crushers, looked very good for the first four innings as he held the Otters to just one hit. But Evansville would get to Mata in the fifth as Kenny Gilbert, Luke Hetherington, and Travis McCleary all hit RBI singles. The Crushers also committed a pair of errors in the inning. Mata allowed four of the six runs (three were earned) while Shannon Sprouse allowed a pair.

Evansville tacked on a run in the sixth as Marcus Rose drew a walk against Jorge Charry, stole second and third, and then scored on a wild pitch. The Crushers staff had four wild pitches on the night. Charry struck out three and did not allow a hit in his two and two thirds innings of relief. Lake Erie closed out the scoring in the seventh as Andrew Davis hit an RBI single to bring home Tyler Johnson.

Mata was saddled with the loss and drops to 2-6 on the season. Evansville starter Andrew Werner went five and a third innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits to take the win. Ben Paxton picked up his third save of the season in relief. The Crushers drop to 45-32 on the season and will wrap up their three game series with the Otters on Sunday. Cardoza Tucker will get the start for Lake Erie against John Ducey.
