Washington Wild Things News Release

Crestwood, Ill. - The Washington Wild Things (36-41), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, lost to the Windy City Thunderbolts (44-33) by a score of 7-1 Saturday night at Standard Bank Stadium.

The Wild Things' offense hit a bump in the road; make that a mountain. Thunderbolts' starter Matt Jernstad proved to be a problem for Wild Things' hitters all night. Jernstad kept the Wild Things hitless until the fifth. In fact, he faced just one batter over the minimum through the first five innings. For the night, he pitched eight innings and gave up one run on five hits while striking out eight in the win.

After a solid start to the game for Wild Things starter Andy Schindling, the Thunderbolts' bats woke up. A leadoff homerun by J.T. Restko in the fourth was just the beginning. Later in the inning, catcher Dan Jordan would hit in what would be the game-winning run on a sacrifice that gave the Thunderbolts a 2-0 lead. They would add three more in the fifth to go up 5-0, with the big hit being a two-run double by outfielder Vinnie Scarduzio who went 2-2 in the game with two walks.

The Wild Things' lone run came in the sixth thanks to three singles and the third one by Chris Sidick scoring Chris Raniere from third. Jacob Dempsey broke up Jernstad's no-hit bid with a leadoff double in the fifth. The hit broke a ten inning hitless streak for Jernstad. By playing tonight, Sidick tied a Frontier League record by playing in his 411th game, a record he will look to break on Sunday.

In the loss, Schindling (4-3) pitched four and third innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Reliever Nick Peterson came on the pitch two and two thirds allowing no hits.

The Wild Things conclude the road trip with the series finale against the Thunderbolts Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. EST. Radio broadcast on 95.3 FM WJPA begins at 3:55. Craig Snipp will get the start for the Wild Things against Dustin Pease for the Thunderbolts.
