Keys Sweep Marathon Doubleheader
May 28, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
On early Tuesday morning, CF Steve Bumbry crossed home plate following a wild pitch by RHP Anatanaer Batista in the top of the seventh. The run by Bumbry gave the Keys a 4-3 lead they did not relinquish. Frederick (25-21) defeated Salem, 4-3, in game two and took game one, 10-3. The start of Friday's doubleheader was delayed by 20 minutes and the two teams waited out a one-hour rain delay in the bottom of the seventh of game one as well.
In game one, the Keys were not fazed by the Major League rehabber, RHP Junichi Tazawa. Frederick scored three runs in the top of first, all on one swing of the bat. With 2B Bobby Stevens on second and LF Kipp Schutz on first, 3B Dale Mollenhauer blasted his three-run shot down the right field line. Mollenhauer's third home run of the year gave the Keys a three-run advantage before Salem came to the plate.
Leading 4-2 in the top of the fourth, the Keys touched up Tazawa with two long balls in his final inning of work. With one out and one on, CF Steve Bumbry went deep to right for his second homer of the season. Following a single by Bobby Stevens, Kipp Schutz blasted Tazawa's final pitch of the evening over the right field fence. Tazawa surrendered eight runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings pitched.
Reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, RHP Bobby Bundy, notched his fifth win of the season after allowing three runs over five innings. LHP Will Startup tossed a scoreless sixth inning of relief and following the one-hour rain delay, RHP Justin Moore closed out the Keys game one victory.
The first pitch of the nightcap of the double dip was not thrown until 10:05 EST. Facing RHP Pete Ruiz, the Keys failed to score in the first inning. The Red Sox took their first lead of the night following the RBI infield single by LF Reynaldo Rodriguez.
In his first at bat as a Frederick Key, DH Joe Oliveira lined a Ruiz pitch over the Red Sox CF Peter Hissey. Dale Mollenhauer easily scored on the play as Oliveira slid into third with a RBI triple. Salem responded in the bottom of the inning when Peter Hissey doubled home SS Derrik Gibson. The Sox led the Keys, 2-1, after two innings.
Kipp Schutz gave the Keys their first lead of the game when he drove home 2B Sammie Starr and Steve Bumbry on a single to right field. Once again, Salem responded. On the first pitch of the bottom of the third, RF Shannon Wilkerson belted a solo shot off LHP Nick Haughian to tie the nightcap at three.
Frederick and Salem remained tied entering the seventh inning. With one down in the top of the seventh, Anatanaer Batista walked Steve Bumbry. The next man to the plate, Bobby Stevens, blooped a Batista pitch into left-center. Bumbry raced from first to third on the Stevens' single. With Kipp Schutz at the plate, Batista uncorked a wild pitch and Bumbry scored to give Frederick a 4-3 lead.
RHP Clay Schrader closed out the game with a scoreless bottom of the seventh. In his first appearance as a Key, Schrader struck two over two shutout innings. Schrader also picked up the win out of the bullpen.
Bobby Stevens finished Friday's doubleheader 5-for-8 with a RBI and two runs scored. Kipp Schutz drove in two runs in both games of the twinbill.
The Keys and Red Sox will play game three of their series on Saturday evening. LHP Nathan Moreau (4-3, 3.89) gets the start for Frederick while RHP Ryan Pressley (3-3, 4.14) will go for Salem. First pitch from LewisGale Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark is set for 6:05 p.m.
The Keys return home on Memorial Day, May 30th with a 4:00 p.m. start against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
