Sox Fall Twice in Midnight Madness DH

Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (May 28, 2011) - The Keys hammered Junichi Tazawa in the opener, then squeaked by in the nightcap that did not conclude until after midnight, garnering a pair from the Red Sox at LewisGale Field in a doubleheader that began on Friday afternoon and did not wrap up until Saturday morning. In the first game, home runs from Dale Mollenhauer, Steve Bumbry, and Kipp Schutz chased Tazawa by the fourth inning in Frederick's 10-3 rout, preceding the Keys' slim 4-3 triumph in the second game. Bumbry scurried home from third on an Anatanaer Batista wild pitch in the top of the seventh, breaking a three-all tie to propel Frederick forward.

Tazawa surrendered runs in three of his four innings on the mound in the opener, including three in the first and four in the fourth. The Keys' knockout swing was Schutz' two-run jack that sent the major-league rehabber to the bench after allowing eight runs on eight hits in three and a third innings. Three Red Sox had multiple hits in the opener, but Salem stranded seven aboard and could not score against the Keys bullpen. Bobby Bundy earned the win, allowing three runs in five innings, while Tyler Kolodny led the Keys with four hits.

A rain delay halted the first game for precisely 60 minutes in the middle of the seventh inning with Frederick leading 10-3. After the hour intermission, the Sox went 1-2-3 in a three-minute last of the seventh to finish the ballgame.

In game two, Salem scored first thanks to three straight singles in the first inning. Though Frederick tied it 1-1 in the top of the second, the Sox bounced back in front thanks to Peter Hissey's RBI double in the home half. The Keys trailed 2-1 in the top of the third when Schutz singled to score two, surging the visitors in front for the first time, but it took just one pitch in the bottom half for Shannon Wilkerson to even the score with a titanic solo laser to left. Wilkerson's fourth homer of the season capped a chaotic first three innings, and unfortunately, concluded Salem's offensive highlights for the night.

Still tied 3-3 in the top of the seven, Batista walked Bumbry and served up a single for Bobby Stevens that moved Bumbry to third. With Schutz batting, a wild toss in the dirt squirted away and allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate, giving Frederick the 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the last, Derrik Gibson reached on a one-out walk, but never moved past first as the next two Sox went in order. The final out was recorded at approximately 12:12 AM, ending a frustrating twin-bill for the Salem Sox.

Salem has now lost ten straight games at LewisGale Field, the longest home losing streak in the Roanoke Valley since the Padres-affiliated Salem Redbirds lost 11 in a row at home from June 1 through June 20 in 1982.

Trailing the Myrtle Beach Pelicans by three and a half games in the Carolina League Southern Division, the Salem Sox look to snap the ugly streak on Saturday evening at 6:05. The Sox and Keys meet again as Ryan Pressly starts for Salem opposite Nathan Moreau for Frederick.
