Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick struck first on Saturday night in Salem and they were able to carry that early momentum to their third consecutive win over the Red Sox. Salem had a chance to steal the game from the Keys when they loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but Frederick closer, Sean Gleason, struck out CF Peter Hissey to end the night. The 6-3 win put the Keys record at 27-21 on the year.
CF Steve Bumbry led the game off with a double to left field. Bumbry came around to score on a groundout by LF Kipp Schutz. The Keys lead was quickly erased in the home half of the first when RF Shannon Wilkerson blasted his second home run in as many games. After one inning in Salem, the game was tied at one.
The Keys regained the lead in the second inning. C Adam Donachie doubled off RHP Ryan Pressly and DH Joe Oliveira followed with a single. SS Michael Rooney brought home Donachie on a groundout to second and Oliveira scored following a RBI single by Steve Bumbry to right field.
After surrendering the solo homer to Shannon Wilkerson, LHP Nathan Moreau did not allow another hit until the seventh inning.
Frederick plated three more runs entering the bottom of the seventh as they lead, 6-1. Salem started to mount a comeback in the seventh as they bounced Moreau from the game. Reynaldo Rodriguez homered and Moreau walked next two batters before he exited. RHP Kenny Moreland entered for Moreau. Moreland got Zach Gentile and Michael Almanzar to fly out before he struck out Derrik Gibson to end the inning.
On the night, Moreau allowed three runs on two hits over 6+ innings and struck out a season-high six batters.
The game remained 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth. Sean Gleason entered the game for Frederick. With two outs, Derrik Gibson hit an infield single to load the bases. Gleason closed the door, however, on the Keys victory when he struck out CF Peter Hissey looking.
Moreau got the win on the night and improved to 5-3 while Gleason picked up his, Carolina League leading, 11th save of the season. Kenny Moreland tossed two scoreless innings of the relief out of the Frederick bullpen.
The Keys will try to sweep the four-game series from the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon in Salem. RHP Ryan O'Shea (3-3, 3.59) will take the hill for Frederick while Salem will turn to LHP Chris Hernandez (5-1, 1.79). First pitch from LewisGale Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark is set for 4:05 p.m.
The Keys return home on Memorial Day, May 30th with a 4:00 p.m. start against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
