Potomac Nationals News Release

(WOODBRIDGE, VA) The Potomac Nationals slide continued Saturday as the Lynchburg Hillcats swept a doubleheader in Woodbridge. The Cats took Game One 10-5 and locked up a 7-2 win in the nightcap to send Potomac to its sixth straight loss and leapfrog the P-Nats in the Carolina League's Northern Division. With the losses, Potomac fell to 18-29 and 10.5 games back of the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Game One was nightmarish from the start, as Lynchburg struck for four runs in the first inning. Todd Cunningham and Andrelton Simmons led off the game with singles and moved to second and third on Phil Gosselin's sacrifice bunt. Adam Milligan brought both home with a single, but the Hillcats were not done. After Joe Terdoslavich walked Joe Leonard singled to left. Shawn McGill then brought both home with a shot to right and the Hillcats led 4-0.

The Hillcats (19-27) were right back at it in the second; they batted around and hung four more on the board against Nationals' starter Trevor Holder. The big blasts were Cunningham's solo home run and Gosselin's run-scoring double.

Potomac (18-29) clawed back into the game in the fifth. Zeke Spruill had not allowed a hit through four and a third innings, but the Nationals broke out in a big way. Four straight hits got the Nationals on the board; J.R. Higley's double broke the seal and made it 8-1. Jose Lozada drove in another run before Eury Perez's sacrifice fly made it 8-3. A Jeff Kobernus single was followed by a Destin Hood double, and the Nats were within three.

But Lynchburg got two runs back in their half of the sixth inning; Adam Milligan blasted a two-run homer to right field against reliever Dean Weaver.

The Nats would not muster another rally and dropped the opener 10-5.

The nightcap began much better for Potomac when Destin Hood launched a home run to deep right center, his fourth of the year. Braeden Schlaehuber got the lead back for the Cats with a two-run homer in the second off Paul Demny. Kyle Davis homered later in the game to make it 3-1 Lynchburg.

The Hillcats got three more in the third. A one-out walk sparked the rally and was followed by an infield single from Terdoslavich and another walk to Joe Leonard. Barrett Kleinknecht then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 4-1. A wild pitch scored Leonard and set the table for Keenan Wiley's RBI single that stretched the Lynchburg lead to five.

The Hillcats tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. After Joe Leonard's one-out single, Justin Bloxom made errors on consecutive plays scored Leonard.

The two clubs play another twinbill Sunday beginning at 12:05.
