Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA (May 28, 2011) - Nearly 11 months after no-hitting the Salem Sox at LewisGale Field in his Carolina League debut, Nathan Moreau baffled the Red Sox again, taking a one-hitter into the seventh inning in Frederick's 6-3 victory on Saturday night. Salem hit a pair of solo homers off Moreau, but the Keys battered Sox starter Ryan Pressly in the early innings, sending Salem to a deficit it could not overcome. After a 20-7 start to the regular season, the Salem Sox have sunk to 24-23, just one game above .500 after winning just four times in the past 20 games, including 11 straight losses at LewisGale Field.
Shannon Wilkerson and Reynaldo Rodriguez both bopped solo shots for the Sox, but those homers came in the first and seventh innings, without a single Salem hit in between. Moreau struck out six in six-plus innings, improving his record to 5-3. Rodriguez led off the seventh with a round-tripper and Moreau walked the next two batters before departing. Reliever Kenny Moreland allowed one of the inherited runners to score when Michael Almanzar's sacrifice fly plated Mark Wagner, but Moreland minimized the damage and kept the Keys ahead by three.
Salem loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth against Frederick closer Sean Gleason, bringing the possibility of a walk-off grand slam into the stratosphere. But Gleason struck out Peter Hissey looking to end the game, one of two punchouts for the Keys closer, who earned his league-leading 11th save of the season.
Wilkerson went 2-4 with a first-inning homer and an eighth-inning double, but no other member of the Red Sox managed multiple hits against the Keys hurlers. Wilkerson's homer was his fifth of the season and second of the weekend series, but Salem mustered just five hits in the game.
Frederick scored one in the first, two in the second, and two in the fifth before chasing Pressly, who through four and two-thirds and suffered his fourth consecutive loss after starting the season 3-0. Kipp Schutz led the Keys with two hits and two RBI, while Steve Bumbry and Adam Donachie each went 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
Salem looks to Chris Hernandez to serve as the stopper to the Sox' current five-game losing streak. On Sunday, Hernandez will square off against Frederick's Ryan O'Shea in the series finale at 4:05. The Sox will be looking not only to squelch the five-game skid, but also the 11-game home losing streak that matches the all-time Salem record, attained by the 1982 Salem Redbirds, a Padres affiliate who played at nearby Kiwanis Field.
