Pelicans Game Notes

May 28, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LHP Noel Arguelles (2-1, 2.31) at RHP Joe Wieland (4-3, 1.73)

DON'T WALK: Considering tonight's starting pitchers, walks should be hard to come by. Joe Wieland has only walked three batters in 52 innings, which is the fourth-best mark in all of Minor League Baseball. Brad Myers (1 BB/59.2 IP - AA/AAA WAS), Carlos Quevedo (2/49.2 - A HOU) and Erasmo Ramirez (2/55 - AA SEA) rank ahead of the Pelicans star. Noel Arguelles has been stingy with issuing bases on balls as well, with just four in 39 innings. That is the fourth-best ratio in the Carolina League.

WE'RE DRAMA KINGS TOO: Following up on John Sadak's note yesterday about Wilimington playing so many close games (28 of 46 have been decided by two runs or fewer), it's worth noting that the Pelicans have been playing many tight games as well. 29 of the Pelicans' 47 games have been one or two-run affairs (62%). The Birds are 10-8 in one-run games and 6-5 in two-run contests.

HOME SWEET HOME: Last night's win improved the Pelicans' home record to 16-7, second in the Carolina League only to tonight's opponent. Wilmington is 15-6 at home. Strangely, only three of the eight teams in the league have a winning record at home, including the Frederick Keys at just 14-13. Even stranger, the only opponent with a winning mark at BB&T Coastal Field is the Lynchburg Hillcats, who took two out of three in Myrtle Beach May 13-15.
