Kernels Win 11th Straight in Pelfrey's Rehab Start

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels won their 11th game in a row on Monday night in a 6-3 win over the Peoria Chiefs at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in front of 2,246 fans.. Minnesota Twins right-hander Mike Pelfrey made a rehab start for the Kernels, picking up the win over six innings.

In Pelfrey's six innings he allowed two runs on only two hits. He commanded the strike zone all night long, punching out six Peoria Chiefs and walking none. He hit one batter. Pelfrey allowed a solo home run to Jacob Wilson in the first inning as the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead early on. However, Pelfrey then retired the next 13 batters as he reached the sixth inning.

Charlie Tilson tripled down the right field line to lead off the sixth inning. After Jesus Montero was hit by a pitch, Tilson scored Peoria's second run on a RBI groundout off the bat of CJ McElroy.

After trailing early, the Kernels quickly took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Niko Goodrum led off the frame with a triple. Jorge Polanco then reached on a throwing error by Chiefs starter Brad Watson. The error allowed Goodrum to score and tie the game 1-1. Polanco would score later in the inning on Travis Harrison's RBI single, giving the Kernels a 2-1 lead. Harrison came home to score on Adam Brett Walker's RBI sacrifice fly, extending the Kernels lead to 3-1.

Max Kepler hit his third home run of the season in the fourth inning, putting the Kernels ahead 4-1. Kepler's shot was blasted to deep right field.

Kepler again came up big in the eighth inning as he pulled a RBI triple into the right field corner. Kepler's first triple with the Kernels plated Travis Harrison, who had walked to begin the inning. With the score 5-2 Kepler came home on Adam Brett Walker's infield RBI single, making the score 6-2.

Patrick Wisdom singled home Nick Martini in the ninth inning for Peoria, cutting the Kernels lead to 6-3.

Mason Melotakis pitched the final three innings of the game, collecting a save for the Kernels. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out two and walking none.

Brad Watson (0-2) took the loss for Peoria, allowing four runs and five hits over five innings.
