Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

July 4, 2006 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels exploded for 13 runs and 11 hits as they beat the Burlington Bees, 13-5, in front of 5,119 fans on McDonald's Baseball Bat Night. The crowd was the largest of the 2006 season and they were treated to a sample of the Kernels' offense early.

Trailing 1-0 in the first, the Kernels executed the double steal to perfection as Larry Infante stole second and Hainly Statia stole home. Then, with runners on the corners, Mark Trumbo launched a home run to left field, his tenth of the season and a 3-run shot to make the score 4-1 Kernels.

Burlington didn't give up as the Bees scored two in the fourth and closed the game to 5-4 after a solo home run by Miguel Vega.

The Kernels broke open the game in the seventh inning as they scored five runs on three hits and took advantage of a Burlington error to make the score 10-4. They added more runs in the eighth as a couple of hits and two Bee errors lead to three more runs. Burlington tacked on a consolation run in the ninth to make the final, 13-5 Kernels.

Andy Hill (3-4) struggled at times, but had plenty of run support to get his third win of the season. Hill pitched 5 innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out three. Chris Howell, Robert Romero and newcomer Mike Pete combined to hold the Bees to two hits and a run over the final four innings of the game.

The Kernels have now hit at least one home run in the last five games and have won four of them.

Burlington starter Rayner Oliveros (4-3) was roughed up for seven runs (all earned) and seven hits in 6-1/3 innings of work. The Bees called upon right fielder Jeremy Jirschele to pitch and he retired the only batter he faced in the eighth inning.

In addition to Trumbo's 3 RBI, Dallas Morris had 3 RBI in short time as he pinch hit for Larry Infante in the seventh and responded with a double and triple. Flint Wipke also tripled, his 8th of the season. Morris, Statia and Stantrel Smith each had two hits for the Kernels.

Cedar Rapids looks to make it three in a row on Wednesday night as Robert Mosebach (4-4) starts for the Kernels against Chris Nicol (3-5). It will be Fairfax State Savings Bank Free Money Wednesday as the first 750 fans through the gates receive an envelope with cash inside from $1 to $100. Gates open at 6 pm, first pitch is scheduled for 7 o'clock.
