Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - Behind some good two-out hitting and six shutout innings by starter Mitch Atkins, the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Clinton LumberKings 6-2 Tuesday night at O'Brien Field.

With no score in the bottom of the second, the Chiefs struck first. Ryan Norwood was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a one-out single by Yusuf Carter. After a Ryne Malone flyout, Alberto Garcia stayed hot, coming through with an RBI line drive single to left to score Norwood and give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Peoria tacked on three more runs in the fourth. With one away, Kyle Reynolds tripled on a ball hit into the right-center field gap. Carter stepped in and ripped a single to left to plate Reynolds.

With Malone at the plate, Carter stole second early in the count and then third base in that same at-bat and came home on a throwing error by catcher Ben Crabtree, trying to nab him at third. Malone walked and swiped second. Garcia flew out to right field but Malone came in to score a batter later on a Dylan Johnston RBI single to give the Chiefs a 4-0 advantage.

The Chiefs added more insurance in the seventh. Dylan Johnston, who had scored earlier in the inning, scored on a groundball single by Mark Reed. Jesus Valdez drove in the sixth run of the game with an RBI fielder's choice to make it a 6-0 ballgame.

The LumberKings did all their scoring in the eighth. Terry Blunt scored on a fielding error off the bat of Truan Mehl, and an RBI single by Crabtree scored John Wittleman to cut the Chiefs lead to four at 6-2. Clinton did not threaten in the ninth.

Atkins fired six shutout innings in earning his seventh win of the season. He allowed five hits while walking three and striking out two. Roger Evenson tossed two innings allowing two unearned runs in relief of Atkins. Jeff Teasley worked the ninth and gave up just one hit. LumberKings' starter Jake Rasner threw 6 1/3 innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits in suffering his tenth loss of the season.
