Burlington Bees News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA (July 4, 2006) The Cedar Rapids Kernels (7-6, 38-45) scored four runs in the first and five in the seventh in a 13-5 victory over the Burlington Bees (4-9, 39-41) at Veterans Memorial Stadium tonight. The Bees have lost four in a row and during this streak, there have been six innings in which their opponent has scored four runs or more. The Kernels lead this series 2-0, but the Bees lead the season series 5-4.

The Bees got on the board with a run in the top of the first. Jose Duarte led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by Josh Johnson. The Kernels responded right away in the bottom of the first. Hainley Statia led off with a single and moved to third on a one-out hit by Larry Infante. With Flint Wipke at the plate, the Kernels started Infante on a delayed steal for second and then had Statia steal home on the throw to second to tie the game. Wipke moved Infante to third with a groundout, and after a walk to Marco Albano, Mark Trumbo blasted the first pitch he saw from Bees starter Rayner Oliveros for a three-run homer to left. The Kernels added another run in the third. With two outs, Wipkie tripled into the right field corner and scored on a single by Albano.

The Bees came back against Kernels starter Andy Hill. With two outs in the top of the fourth, Hill walked Brady Everett, Valentino Arce reached on an error, and Ethien Santana drove them both in to cut the lead to 5-3. In the top of the fifth, Miguel Vega belted his tenth homer of the season that got the Bees to within one at 5-4. Hill (3-5) came out after five, but earned the win as the Bees never to even. Chris Howell pitched two perfect innings in relief before the Kernels broke the game open in the seventh.

With one out, a single by Stantrel Smith and a walk to Madison Edwards knocked Oliveros out of the game and Eliezer Garcia came in out of the bullpen. Garcia walkrcia walked Statia to load the bases and Josh Davies singled to drive in two for a 7-4 lead. A double steal and a wild pitch made it 8-4. Dallas Morris drove in Davies with a pinch-hit triple and an intentional walked ended Garcias night before he got an out. David Henninger was greeted by a sacrifice fly by Albano to get the Kernels into double digits before Trumbo was called out on strikes to end the inning. The Kernels added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of two Bees errors and a two-run double by Morris that finished the scoring. After that hit, Jeremy Jirschele came in from right field to pitch, knocked down a come-backer by Wipke, and recovered to throw to first in time to end the inning.

Robert Romero pitched a scoreless eighth and Mike Pete made his Kernels debut in the ninth. The Bees added their final run against Pete in the ninth. Two walks, an infield single by Johnson, and an error by Statia at shortstop brought in the run.

The Bees and Kernels continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RH Chris Nicoll (3-5, 2.74) will start for the Bees against RH Robert Mosebach (5-4, 3.28) for the Kernels. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
