Lugnuts lose third straight

LANSING - The West Michigan Whitecaps blasted two home runs on Independence Day to top the Lansing Lugnuts 5-3 at Oldsmobile Park Tuesday evening before 9,722 fans. It marks the third straight loss for Lansing.

The Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Cameron Maybin cracked a two run homer to deep left-center field. It was his third longball of the season.

Lansing fought back in the fifth when Sean Shoffit beat out an infield single to plate Al Quintana to make the game 2-1. Yuber Rodriguez, who doubled earlier in the inning, moved to third base on the play. He would score on a Jason Armstrong groundout that tied the game at 2-2.

The Lugnuts grabbed the lead in the next frame after Josh Bell ripped an RBI double inside the bag down the right field line. The hit scored Joey Metropoulos to make it 3-2..

The lead would not last long for the Lugnuts, as West Michigan regained control in the seventh. With runners at first and second, Cory Middleton blasted his first homer of the season over the left field wall to give the Whitecaps the lead for good at 5-3.

Luke French (7-4) got the win for the Whitecaps, throwing six innings and allowing three runs on nine hits.

Jordan Timm (3-1) took the loss for Lansing, allowing two runs on just one hit in 1/3 of an inning.

Orlando Perdomo notched his 19th save.

Lansing and West Michigan will play the third game of the series on Wednesday night at Oldsmobile Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
