Dayton bullpen gives up five in the seventh , lose 12-4

Geneva, IL - The Dayton Dragons (6-7, 41-42) continued a nightmarish seven seasons of games at Elfstrom Stadium, the home of the Kane County Cougars (8-5, 48-34). For the second straight night, the Dragons jumped out in front early only to have the Cougars come roaring back. Kane County snapped a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning picking up a five run frame and added three more in the eighth on route to pounding the Dragons 12-4.

The Dragons picked up a pair the top of the second inning to get the games first run across the plate. Mike Griffin led off the inning with a gap double to left center field off Cougars starter Trey Shields (ND). Griffin moved to third on a bunt single by Habelito Hernandez. With runners on the corners, Craig Tatum drove home his second run of the series and the first of two on the night with a single to right that scored Griffin for a 1-0 lead. Gerardo Cabrera followed with a double to left that scored Hernandez and the Dragons led 2-0.

Dayton extended the lead off Shields with a single run in the fourth inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Hernandez led off the inning with a gap triple to right center and trotted home on a long SAC fly to center off the bat Tatum drove home Hernandez with the third run of the game.

Robert Manuel (ND) kept the Cougars off the board until the bottom of the fourth inning when KC scored a pair to make it 3-2. Frank Martinez picked up the runs batted in with a double to center and the Cougars were within one.

With the game tied at 3-3 heading into the sixth inning, Dayton grabbed a run off Shields to take the lead back at 4-3. Mike DeJesus picked up the RBI with a single to left giving Dayton the lead for the final time.

Jeff Baisley, the Midwest League leader in runs batted in, knocked home a pair on the night including in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Steve Kleen hurt the Dragons on numerous occasions on the night with a four for five night at the plate with three runs batted in. Kleen gave the Cougars the lead at 5-4 with an RBI double off Logan Ondrusek (LP, 3-3) in the bottom of the sixth.

Kane County would blow the game wide open off the Dragons bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings, picking up a combined eight runs and eight hits off Ondrusek, Justin Mallett (ND) and Rainer Feliz (ND). The 12 runs and 18 hits surrendered by Dragons pitching are both season highs in 2006.

The Dragons continue the four game series at Kane County on Wednesday afternoon. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry all the action from Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, Illinois live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 12:30 PM; Wednesday afternoon's first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM. RHP Daniel Guerrero (0-1, 22.50 ERA) will make the start for Dayton, while the Cougars counter with RHP Vince Mazzaro (7-5, 5.00 ERA).
