West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI- Five runs in the fifth were all the Cedar Rapids Kernels needed in their 5-3 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. The Kernels took advantage of three costly Whitecaps' errors to turn a one run deficit into a four run lead. West Michigan starter Casey Crosby lost for just the third time at home this year.

Shaky defense cost the Whitecaps in the series opener. The three errors in the fifth undermined a tremendous pitching performance by the four ‘Caps hurlers. Crosby started and gave up 4 hits in 4.1 innings. He did not allow an earned run or a walk and struck out six.

Whitecaps' reliever Anthony Shawler, Nick Cassavechia, and Tyler Conn combined for 5 hits in 4.2 innings with no runs allowed, and no walks given up.

West Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the third on Billy Nowlin's RBI triple.

The fifth inning saw the game change for the ‘Caps as Cedar Rapids jumped ahead 5-1. Nine Kernels came to the plate with 5 scoring on just 3 hits; all singles.

Mike Shoemaker started for Cedar Rapids and fired 7 innings of 6-hit ball for the win.

The Whitecaps tried to come back with single runs in the seventh and the ninth. In the seventh, Alden Carrithers got aboard on a single and scored on Gustavo Nunez's sacrifice fly.

In the ninth, Avisail Garcia's two-out RBI hit plated Carrithers to pull the ‘Caps within two, 5-3. The Whitecaps would get the tying run to the plate, but Nunez flew out to left to end the game.

Alden Carrithers and Avisail Garcia each had 2 hits for West Michigan.

The two teams meet in game two of the series on Saturday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. EST on ‘Star Wars Night'.
