Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The Fort Wayne TinCaps were shut out through eight innings Friday at Parkview Field, but they still managed to push the Beloit Snappers to the limit in a 3-2 loss. The TinCaps pushed the tying run to third base in the bottom of the 9th and came up short.
Beloit RHP Bobby Lanigan had lost his last three starts entering play on Friday, but worked into the 9th inning with a shutout. He was charged with both TinCaps runs as RHP Billy Bullock allowed the inherited runners to score. Lanigan tied a season-high with 10 strikeouts. He allowed six hits and two walks.
The Snappers jumped in front in the top of the 4th against Fort Wayne RHP Erik Davis. Danny Rams and Nate Hanson hit back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Angel Morales lifted a sacrifice fly to center to double the deficit. Drew Thompson then led off the 5th inning with a home run to right, making it 3-0 Beloit.
The TinCaps didn't put a runner into scoring position until the 8th inning when Yefri Carvajal doubled into the right-field corner. He was stranded there as Lanigan retired the next three batters in a row.
Fort Wayne rallied in the bottom of the 9th. Blake Tekotte drew a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Jaff Decker singled to right to put runners at first and second and brought the tying run to the plate. Bullock was summoned from the bullpen and walked Allan Dykstra to load the bases with one out. Cole Figueroa, Bullock's former University of Florida teammate, roped an RBI single to right to cut the deficit to 3-1. After a strikeout accounted for the second out, Adam Zornes was hit by a pitch to drive home a run and make it 3-2. Bullock struck out the next batter to end the game.
Lanigan (8-7) picked up the win and Bullock notched his first save with Beloit. Davis (10-5) lost for the first time since July 13th. With the loss, the TinCaps dropped to 72-32, 27-7 in the second half. The Snappers upped their record to 39-64, 12-21 in the half. The three-game series between the TinCaps and the Snappers (Class-A Minnesota Twins) continues Saturday in a 7:05pm start. Fort Wayne LHP Mike Watt (5-2) goes to the mound against Beloit RHP Liam Hendriks (1-2).
