Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
June 9, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels five game winning streak was snapped by the Beloit Snappers, 6-5, at Pohlman Field in Beloit, WI on Monday night. Hector Estrella was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI, Gordie Gronkowski was 2 for 4 with two doubles and RBI and Jeremey Moore hit his eighth home run and second in as many games.
Kernels starter Jordan Walden allowed three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three over five innings in a no-decision effort. Michael Davitt (2-5) allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits over two innings to take the loss.
The Kernels trailed 3-0 after three innings, but scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and took the lead in the top of the seventh on back to back doubles by Estrella and Gronkowski. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Davitt led to two unearned runs to tie the game and a sacrifice fly by Garret Olson put the Snappers ahead to stay at 6-5.
Beloit reliever Steven Hirschfield (5-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Michael Tarsi and Matt Williams pitched 1/3 inning in the top of the ninth to notch his sixth save.
