August 4, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Peoria Chiefs completed a four game sweep of the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a score of 3-2 Friday night in Peoria. Kernels starter Anthony Ortega (1-4) struck out eight in seven innings giving up seven hits and three runs. He ended up being the tough-luck loser as 11 Kernels were left stranded on the basepaths.
For the second game in a row, the Kernels out hit Peoria, 8-7, as Flint Wipke and Dallas Morris each had two hits. Brad Coon continues to pace the league in the stolen base department with his 43rd swipe of the season.
Peoria starter Jesus Yepez (5-6) worked around three walks and two Chief errors to pick up the win. A trio of pitchers from the bullpen kept the Kernels in check and Matt Avery closed out the game to pick up his 14th save and third of the series.
The Kernels finished their eight game road trip with a 2-6 record and head into Saturday's series opener at home with Lansing with only three wins in their last 15 games. An 18-23 second half record has Cedar Rapids at least 4-1/2 games behind Beloit, pending Friday's finals, for the final second half playoff spot with only 28 games remaining in the season.
The good news for Kernel fans is that 16 of the final 28 games are here at Veterans Memorial Stadium where the Kernels sport a 27-27 record. Cedar Rapids opens an eight game home stand on Saturday with four games against Lansing. After an off day, the Kernels welcome Wisconsin to the stadium for four more games before heading back out on the road August 14th for eight games.
Tomorrow night is McDonald's Youth Jersey night as the first 500 kids 12 and under get a free Kernels and McDonald's baseball jersey. After the game, the Kernels continue their Saturday Night Fireworks series with an awesome show that lights up the night sky.
Tickets for all remaining Kernel home games can be ordered on-line at www.kernels.com or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at (319) 896-7560 after 10 am.
