Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs complete a four-game sweep of the Cedar Rapids Kernels, their sixth sweep of that variety, with a 3-2 win Friday night at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs took an early three-run lead, and it held up the rest of the way as they victoriously concluded an eight-game homestand.
The Chiefs scored the games first run in the first. With one away, Davy Gregg walked, and Jesus Valdez singled on a bouncing ball through the left side. After a wild pitch that advanced both runners, Ryan Norwood flied out to right, but it was deep enough to bring home Gregg from third and give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Peoria staged a two-out rally in the third to add to their lead. With two outs and nobody on base, Ryne Malone and Valdez singled. Norwood walked setting the table for Alberto Garcia. Garcia came through when he connected on a clutch, two-run opposite field double down the right field line to plate two and make it a 3-0 ballgame.
Cedar Rapids came within one in the fifth. Stantrel Smith singled to lead off the inning. Brad Coon dragged a bunt down the first baseline fielded by Blake Lalli, but the throw by the Chiefs catcher sailed into right field allowing Smith to score and Coon to reach third. Marco Albano grounded out to second with Coon scoring to cut the Chiefs lead to 3-2.
Jesus Yepez picked up his first win in over a month firing six innings and allowing no earned runs. Scott Koerber and Jon Mueller combined to throw a scoreless seventh and eighth innings. Matt Avery earned his 14th save with a perfect ninth. Cedar Rapids starter Anthony Ortega was given the loss. He went seven innings and allowed three runs on seven hits.
