Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

St. Louis Cardinals' LHP Mark Mulder will embark on a rehabilitation assignment that will begin with a start at John O'Donnell Stadium on Sunday evening, the Swing of the Quad Cities announced on Friday. The two-time All-Star will take on the Clinton LumberKings in a game scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch.

Mulder, who will turn 29-years-old on Saturday, has been on the Disabled List since June 22 with rotator cuff inflammation and irritation in his left shoulder. He threw 50-60 pitches in a simulated game at Busch Stadium on Tuesday, and will participate in game action on Sunday for the first time since June 20. Mulder entered this season ranked fifth among active pitchers with a .660 career winning percentage, having gone 97-50 through his first six year in the major leagues.

Originally a first-round pick (2nd overall) by the Oakland Athletics out of Michigan State in the 1998 draft, Mulder made his professional debut with the Triple-A Vancouver Canadians in 1999. He reached the big leagues for good the next season, making 27 starts for Oakland as a 22-year-old rookie. The native of South Holland, Illinois, burst onto the scene as a second-year big-leaguer in 2001, leading the American League with 21 wins while finishing in the league's top ten with a 3.45 ERA and coming in second in the voting for the Cy Young Award. During his five decorated seasons with the Athletics, Mulder was named to the All-Star Team twice ('03, '04), led the league in complete games twice ('03, '04), and led the league in shutouts twice ('01, '03).

The southpaw was traded from Oakland to St. Louis prior to the 2005 season in exchange for Dan Haren, Kiki Calero, and prospect Daric Barton. In his first year with the Redbirds, Mulder went 16-8 with a 3.64 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 32 starts to help St. Louis reach the National League Championship Series. He had made 15 starts in 2006 before landing on the DL, going 6-5 with a 6.09 ERA.

In seven career post-season starts, Mulder has gone 3-4 with a 2.34 ERA. He has yet to appear in a World Series game.

Sunday's contest against the Clinton LumberKings will also be the Optimists Youth Appreciation Day as well as a Mix 96 Family Fun Day. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., as Mulder will start opposite Clinton's RHP Omar Poveda.

UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will close out their series in Lansing on Friday night, as LHP Adam Daniels (7-8, 3.01) will take the mound for the Swing opposite RHP Kristian Bell (6-6, 3.88) of the Lugnuts. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT and coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 will begin at 5:50 p.m.

NEXT HOMESTAND: The Swing will return to Davenport on Saturday for an eight-game homestand that will last from August 5-13, as the Clinton LumberKings and West Michigan Whitecaps will each come to town for four games.

UPCOMING PROMOTIONS: The next homestand will kickoff on Saturday as WQPT will bring Clifford the Big Red Dog to John O'Donnell Stadium and a fireworks display (KWQ/WQPT/B-100) will follow the game. Cardinals' pitcher Mark Mulder will pitch for the Swing in a rehab assignment on Sunday, which will also be the Optimists Youth Appreciation Day as well as a Mix 96 Family Fun Day. A Q106.5 $1 Monday comes your way on Monday. One day later Tasty Tuesday will come to JOD, as fans will have the opportunity to sample beers from area breweries and vote on their favorite. If you like free T-shirts, come to the ballpark early on Friday, August 11, to take advantage of an i-wireless/KWQC/River 104.9 giveaway. The best promotion of the bunch might be on Saturday, August 12, when the first 500 fans will receive baseballs autographed by past and present major leaguers as well as Swing players. A KWQC/WKBF fireworks show will follow the game. Bring your pups out to the homestand finale on Sunday, August 13, while will be Dog Day sponsored by Happy Dog Bakery as well as a Mix 96 Family Fun Day.
