Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - The Burlington Bees (17-25, 52-57) scored one run and had the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth, but Jose Marte struck out pinch-hitter Jose Duarte to end the game and preserve the Clinton LumberKings (11-31, 34-77) 3-2 win at Community Field tonight. The Bees and LumberKings split this four-game series, but the Bees won the season series 7-5.

The game was scoreless through five innings as starters Carlos Rosa of the Bees and Juan Jimenez of Clinton were cruising on the mound. Clinton broke through in the top of the sixth inning and made Rosa pay for a brief lapse of control. With two outs, John Mayberry and John Whittleman both walked and Mayberry scored on a base hit to right-center by Grant Gerrard. Rosa allowed just the one run through seven innings and has allowed just three runs in 31.1 innings over his last four starts. The Bees tied the game against Jimenez in the seventh. Brady Everett walked, went to third on a one-out single by Jeremy Jirschele, and scored when Jimenez was called for his second balk of the game.

The base on balls led to the Bees undoing in the eighth. Eliezer Garcia replaced Rosa and walked Terry Blunt and Mayberry before the Bees quickly went to Kraig Schambough in relief instead. After a strikeout, Schambough walked Gerrard to load the bases and Chris Kemp bounced a single over the drawn-in infield to drive in two and give the LumberKings a 3-1 lead.

Jimenez walked Josh Johnson to start the eighth, so the LumberKings turned the ball over to Josh Giles. Valentino Arce greeted him with an infield single that extended his hitting streak to ten, tying Jeff Howell for the longest streak by a Bee this year. Arce beat out a slow roller to third and when Whittleman's throw bounced in the dirt off the glove of Chris Kemp at first, Johnson raced all the way to third. After a strikeout, Miguel Vega fouled off four 3-2 pitches with Arce running at first. On the fifth, Vega hit a ground ball up the middle that hit Arce in the leg on his way to second for the second out and Johnson had to remain at third. Giles got Everett to poput to end the inning.

Cody Harkcom walked two, but stranded the runners in the top of the ninth inning giving the Bees one last chance. Giles struck out the first two batters before Mario Lisson singled to keep the inning alive. Lisson went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by Ethien Santana to get the Bees to within one. Santana went to second on another wild pitch and after a walk to Johnson, the LumberKings brought in Marte who caught Duarte looking at a 1-2 curveball to end the game for his sixth save of the season. Jimenez (3-9) snapped a string of seven straight losing starts and earned his first win since June 13th. Garcia (2-3) got the loss after earning a win in relief two nights ago.

During the eighth inning, Bees General Manager Chuck Brockett and Royals Senior Director of Minor League Operations Shaun McGinn announced to the crowd that the organizations have signed a four-year extension to their Player Development Contract, keeping the organizations affiliated through at least 2010.

The Bees start a four-game series against the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field in Ohio tomorrow night. RH Matt Kniginyzky (8-3, 3.22) will start for the Bees against RH Carlos Fisher (8-5, 3.09) of the Dragons. Game time is 6:00 Central time and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
