Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Appleton, WI - The Cedar Rapids Kernels battled back from 8-0 and 12-2 deficits on Friday evening but couldn't claw all the way back in a 12-9 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Neither pitching staff was sharp in a game that featured 21 runs, 20 hits, 18 walks and five hit batsmen. The Kernels fall to 45-28, 2-5 in the second half.

Wisconsin plated eight runs in the first inning as the first eight men to bat reached. The Kernels responded with two in the top of the second as Kyler Fedko was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Alerick Soularie added a sacrifice fly to left.

The Timber Rattlers tacked on one in the third then plated three in the fourth, stretching their lead to 12-2. Will Holland drew a bases-loaded walk with one down in the top of the fifth, then Jake Rucker promptly cleared the bases with a three-run triple crushed down the right field line.

Tyler Palm and Derek Molina combined to toss 4.0 scoreless innings of relief to pin down the Timber Rattler lineup, then backup catcher Frank Nigro added a zero in the eighth with a pair of punchouts to keep things at 12-6 entering the ninth.

Cedar Rapids made things interesting in the final frame as Fedko was again struck by a pitch with the bases loaded followed by a two-run Yunior Severino single two batters later, but the tying run was left at the plate.

Severino (2-for-4, 2 HBP, R, 2 RBI) and Seth Gray (2-for-6, 3B) each had multi-hit games while Holland (1-for-3, BB, HBP, 3 R, RBI) and Dylan Neuse (1-for-3, BB, HBP, 2 R) both scored multiple runs in the Kernels' loss.

Game five of the series is set for 6:40 p.m. CT on Saturday evening in Appleton.
