Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Great Lakes Loons (affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers) at Dow Diamond. This is game four of a six-game series. Season Series: Great Lakes 6, Dayton 3. Current Series: Dayton 2, Great Lakes 1.
Last Game: Thursday: Dayton 11, Great Lakes 8. The Dragons battled back after trailing 6-2 after one inning to win their second straight game. Daniel Vellojin hit two home runs and drove in three runs while Elly De La Cruz hit a home run and added three RBI. The Dayton bullpen combined for six innings, allowing just one earned run. Dayton pitchers struck out 17 for the second straight night, matching the season high.
June Notes: The Dragons finished the month of June with a record of 12-15, their first losing month of the season. They finished 10th in the MWL in runs per game (4.63) and 11th in team ERA (5.47). Dragons hitters finished with the most strikeouts in Minor League Baseball in June, averaging 12.1 per game. Individually, Elly De La Cruz led the team in nearly every offensive category, batting .313 with seven home runs, 20 RBI, and an OPS of 1.008. Joe Boyle posted a 0.51 ERA in June while Myles Gayman finished at 1.98.
Dragons in the Standings: Six games into the second half, the Dragons are tied for first place with Great Lakes and West Michigan. Dayton finished the first half in second place, one game behind Great Lakes.
Team Notes
Dayton has gone 4-2 in the second half despite being outscoring 49-31. Opponents have scored 35 runs in the two Dragons losses and 14 runs in the four wins.
Dayton is first in the MWL in home runs with 88 and first in slugging percentage at .417. However, the Dragons lead the league in strikeouts (their total of 844 is tied for second most in Minor League Baseball). The Dragons have only 10 sacrifice flies this season, tied for the third fewest in Minor League Baseball.
Player Notes
Daniel Vellojin has played in 10 games since joining the Dragons, batting .375 with a 1.200 OPS. Since June 19 (Vellojin's first game with Dayton), he ranks second in the MWL in on-base percentage, tied for third in home runs, sixth in OPS, and eighth in batting average.
Elly De La Cruz (seventh youngest position player in the league with at least 120 AB) over his last 31 games (since May 25) is batting .330 with nine home runs and 24 RBI. De La Cruz ranks in the top four in the MWL in OPS, slugging percentage, home runs, RBI, batting average, hits, runs, extra base hits, and stolen bases.
Joe Boyle has an earned run average of 0.65 and opponent's batting average of .086 on the year. Both figures would lead all Minor League Baseball, but he is two innings short of the minimum number to qualify.
Donovan Benoit over his last six appearances since June 10 has allowed one earned run in 9.1 innings with two wins and two saves.
Myles Gayman over his seven appearances since May 26 has posted a 1.80 ERA (15 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 14 SO).
J.V. Martinez over his last six games is batting .350 (7 for 20) with two home runs.
