Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - A Kala'i Rosario RBI single broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning, propelling Cedar Rapids to a 2-0 victory in game one of the six-game series against West Michigan.
Tuesday evening's contest began as a pitcher's duel. Kyle Jones got the start for Cedar Rapids and had his best start of the year, not allowing a run on just three hits across the first five innings.
Carlos Pena got the start for West Michigan and was also dominant on the mound. The left-hander stifled the Kernels' bats in his four innings of work, allowing no runs on just two hits while picking up four strikeouts.
When the two starters exited the contest, the score was the same as when they started, 0-0.
It would remain that way until the bottom of the seventh inning when Cedar Rapids put two runners on base at the same time, the first time all night, either side accomplished that. But Erick Pinales got a pair of flyouts to work his way out of the jam and keep the game scoreless going into the eighth.
Regi Grace came on for the eighth inning out of the Cedar Rapids bullpen and tossed a 1-2-3- frame keeping the score tied headed into the bottom half of the inning.
Noah Miller started off the bottom of the eighth with a single; then a Naoh Cardenas walk put runners on first and second for Rosario, who delivered an RBI single into right field to break the scoreless tie and put the Kernels ahead 1-0. The next batter, Ben Ross, lined out to center, allowing Cardenas to tag up and move to third. Cardenas advanced the same way to home plate on a Tanner Schobel sac fly to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead.
Grace came back out for the ninth inning and closed out the victory, the Kernels' second straight, 2-0.
With the win, Cedar Rapids improves to 7-8, and West Michigan slides to 9-7. The two sides meet again back at Veterans Memorial Stadium Wednesday at 6:35, Jordan Carr makes his third start of the season for Cedar Rapids, opposite West Michigan's Keider Montero.
