Kernels hit five home runs in 10-7 win over Fort Wayne

The Cedar Rapids Kernels hit five home runs, two by Matt Sweeney, in a 10-7 win over the Fort Wayne Wizards on Friday night at Memorial Stadium in Fort Wayne.

The five home runs is a season high for the Kernels, who lead the MWL with 70 home runs as a team, and Sweeney joins P.J. Phillips as the only Kernel player to hit more than one in a single game.

Wil Ortiz, Tyler Johnson and P.J. Phillips homered for the Kernels who improve to 10-10 in the second half and 48-41 overall. Fort Wayne falls to 9-10 and 40-48 overall.

Kernels starter David Herndon (8-5) allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out five in 6.1 innings to get his eighth win of the season. Warner Madrigal allowed a hit, walked one and struck out four over two innings to earn his fifth save. It was Herndon's first win since June 7th.

Fort Wayne starter Drew Miller (2-4) allowed six runs and nine hits and struck out seven over six innings to take the loss.

Sweeney finished the night 3 for 5 with a double, two HR and four RBI as the Kernels had 13 hits on the night. Phillips and Johnson had two RBI each and Ortiz and Mark Trumbo added a double and an RBI.

The Kernels and Wizards play game two of their four game series on Saturday night from Fort Wayne at 6 pm CDT as Trevor Bell (4-2) starts for the Kernels. The game can be heard at www.kernels.com , or on 1450 KMRY AM in eastern Iowa.
