Bees Get Extra Inning Revenge; Beat Loons 6-5
July 14, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons had never played an extra inning game until Friday night. On Saturday evening, it was more of the same but this time the Loons fell to the Burlington Bees in front of 5,488 fans by a score of 6-5 in 11 innings.
The Bees jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning when Burlington jumped all over Loons starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw when Jeff Bianchi hit a three-run home run to spot the Bees with quick five runs. The Loons would answer in the second and fourth innings thanks to home runs by third-baseman Josh Bell and first-baseman James Peterson to bring the score to 5-4. In the seventh, Loons catcher Juan Apodaca hit a game-tying home run in the seventh inning off of Bees starter Mario Santiago to make it a 5-5 ballgame.
In the ninth, controversy was the story when Juan Apodaca battled threw a 10-pitch at bat to draw a walk and advanced to second on Trayvon Robinsons single to left before being pinch-ran for by infielder Juan Rivera. The speedy pinch-runner advanced to third on an Adolfo Gonzalez fly out. Then, with Preston Mattingly at the plate Robinson tried to get himself caught in a rundown in an attempt to send Rivera home and score the game winning run. Unfortunately for the Loons, home plate umpire Eric Albright called Rivera out at the plate. The call drew a chorus of boos from the Dow Diamond faithful, and also a very animated argument from Loons manager Lance Parrish.
After the Loons threatened but failed to score in the tenth, Miguel Sanfler came on and allowing a walk and a hit to Burlington batters before Felix Peralta slapped an RBI-single up the middle, scoring the go-ahead run to make it 6-5 in favor of the Bees.
Kershaw didn't allow a run after the five-run first inning while striking out eight in his next four innings. Joe Jones came on to pitch two scoreless innings striking out two Bees hitters. Chris Malone pitched three innings without allowing a run before giving way to Miguel Sanfler who allowed the go-ahead run to score for the Bees in picking up the loss. His record dropped to 2-3.
Ryan Dipietro (5-5) worked 3.2 scoreless innings for the Bees in picking up his fifth win of the season before Chris Hayes worked a scoreless eleventh to get his seventh save.
The Bees-Loons series continues Saturday when left-hander Josh Wall will get the start for Great Lakes as the Loons will celebrate Family Fun in the SUNday. Game time is 3:05pm. Brad Golder will call the action from Midland as the game will be carried in Mid-Michigan on the flagship home of Loons Baseball, Thunder Country 100.9 WYLZ.
