Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities scored eight unanswered runs to thrill a crowd of 4,503 at John O'Donnell Stadium on Saturday night, defeating the Peoria Chiefs, 8-5, for their third straight win despite an early four-run deficit.

Quad Cities (12-9, 50-40) moved a season-high 10 games over .500 for the second time this season, improving to 6-1 against Ryne Sandberg and the Chiefs this year. Peoria (12-10, 43-48) will try to avoid the sweep in the series finale on Sunday afternoon, throwing the Chicago Cubs' Wade Miller to the mound in a rehab stint at O'Brien Field.

Trailing 4-0 after the top of the first, the Swing bats came roaring back. Daryl Jones led off the bottom of the first with a single, and after stealing second base came home on a base hit by Tony Cruz.

Two innings later, the Swing snatched the lead for good. Jared Schweitzer and Cruz pulled Quad Cities to within one run with back-to-back solo homers, marking the fourth time this season - and second game in a row - that the Swing have registered back-to-back longballs. Later in the frame Steven Hill scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch, and Jose Ramirez lined a base hit to left that drove home Nick Derba to put Quad Cities in front by a 5-4 score.

The offense kept on coming in the bottom of the fourth. Jones opened the frame with a triple to the gap in right-center, scoring moments later on a wild pitch. After Schweitzer drew a walk and Hill doubled him to third, Christian Reyes added a two-run single that pushed the score to 8-4.

That left Shaun Garceau (6-7) in position to pick up the win despite a shaky start to his outing. The 19-year-old right-hander gave up four runs - three earned - on five hits during a rough first inning, but bounced back to finish strong in five innings of work. Over his last four frames he retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced, setting down the final 10 men in order before handing the ball over to the bullpen.

Kenny Maiques (21) closed the door in the ninth inning, striking out one in a 1-2-3 inning to earn his 21st save of the year. That total moved him into a tie for seventh place on the Quad Cities all-time list, just four saves behind Henry Bonilla's record of 25 during the 2001 season.

The Chiefs initially snagged the lead in the very first inning, rallying for four runs right off the bat. Leadoff hitter Ryne Malone got it started with a single and promptly came home on a double to center by Jim Adduci. After a bunt moved Adduci to third Derek Schermerhorn hit a bouncer to the hot corner, but the Swing botched a rundown play at the plate and an error allowed another run to score. Peoria added RBI-singles by Blake Lalli and Brian LeClerc to take a quick 4-0 lead after just a half-inning of play.

But eight runs later, the Swing had seized control of the ballgame.

The loss went to Jake Renshaw (9-5), who was touched for five runs on eight hits over three innings of work.
