Burlington Bees News Release

Midland, MI (July 14, 2007) - Felix Peralta's two-out single in the top of the eleventh inning drove in Jeff Bianchi with the game-winning run as the Burlington Bees (11-10, 41-49) beat the Great Lakes Loons (7-13, 41-49) at Dow Diamond tonight. This series is tied 1-1 after back-to-back extra-inning games and the season series is tied 3-3.

The Bees jumped on Loons' starter Clayton Kershaw in the top of the first inning. Kershaw entered the game ranked third in the Midwest League with a 2.12 ERA, but Derrick Robinson, Kurt Mertins, Joe Dickerson, and Brady Everett started the game with four straight singles to produce two quick runs. After a groundout, Bianchi launched the first pitch he saw over the wall in left for a three-run homer. It is Bianchi's first home run of the season and the Bees' led 5-0. After a walk to Jesus Soto, Kershaw settled down and allowed just one more hit through five innings, but his ERA jumped to 2.55.

Bees' starter Mario Santiago entered the game tenth in the league with a 2.67 ERA. He worked a scoreless first inning, but in the second Josh Bell led off with a long home run to second to get the Loons on the board. James Peterson followed with a single that ate up Robinson in center for an error that allowed him to get to second. Peterson scored on two groundouts for an unearned run to make it 5-2. In the fourth, Bell drew a one-out walk and Peterson got a fly ball up in the wind to left that sailed over the wall for a two-run homer that got the Loons to within one at 5-4. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Juan Apodaca took Santiago over the wall in left for a solo shot that tied the game and knocked Santiago out of the game. Santiago's ERA now sits at 2.89.

Ryan DiPietro took over for Santiago on the mound and pitched 3.2 scoreless innings with some help from his defense. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Loons had runners on the corners with two outs and DiPietro got ahead of Preston Mattingly 0-2. The Loons decided to try to steal a run. Trayvon Robinson wandered away from first and DiPietro threw behind him. Luis Castillo chased him towards second and then threw to Bianchi. As Robinson slid into second, pinch-runner Juan Rivera broke from third for the plate, but Bianchi's relay throw back to the plate was in time to cut him down and send the game to extra-innings.

Joe Jones followed Kershaw with two scoreless innings and Chris Malone pitched three shutout innings before the Loons brought in Miguel Sanfler for the eleventh. With one out, Bianchi singled and went to second on a wild pitch. After a groundout, Castillo walked setting up Peralta who lined a base hit to center to drive in the go-ahead run. Chris Hayes finished off the bottom of the eleventh inning for his seventh save. DiPietro (5-5) picked up the win and Sanfler (2-3) got the loss.

The Bees and Loons continue this series tomorrow afternoon with a 2:05 Central time start from Dow Diamond. RH Harold Mozingo (7-8, 4.42) will start for the Bees against RH Josh Wall (5-9, 4.40) for the Loons. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:45.
