Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - After being no-hit through four innings before rallying late in a victory Friday night, the Dragons didn't wait Saturday night to dent the dish against the Clinton LumberKings. Dayton scored eight runs in the first three innings and held on for their third straight victory, posting an 8-2 victory over Clinton in front of 9,273 fans at Fifth Third Field.
Dayton used the long ball to get to Clinton starter Jeremiah Haar (LP, 3-1) in the bottom of the first. Drew Stubbs led off for the Dragons by taking the second pitch he saw deep over the wall in left center for his seventh home run of the season. After Haar settled down to get the next two outs, Denis Phipps drew a walk on four pitches for a two-out base runner. After a balk put Phipps on second, Chris Heisey hit an RBI single to put the Dragons out in front 2-0. With Heisey at first, Logan Parker crushed a 2-1 pitch off the batter's eye in straight away center field for his second home run of the season. Parker's two run shot put the Dragons in front 4-0.
The Dragons weren't finished scoring after one inning, as they went back for two more runs in both the second and third innings against Haar. In the second, Chris Heisey added two more RBIs to his total with another single, scoring Justin Turner and Juan Francisco for the 6-0 lead. In the third, Carson Kainer led off with a double and went to third on Zack Cozart's single to third. Clinton third baseman John Whittleman made a great diving stop on the ball off Cozart's bat, but threw wildly to first and the error allowed Kainer to score. Later in the inning, Turner added an RBI double for the 8-0 lead.
Due to high innings pitched totals, the Cincinnati Reds and Dayton Dragons have implemented a tandem pitching rotation for Jordan Smith (ND) and Travis Webb (WP, 6-4). Smith went the first three innings, allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out two. Webb followed with 3.0 innings of his own, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
After getting an RBI single from Manny Pina in the fourth against Webb, the LumberKings picked up an RBI double from David Paisano in the 7th against Misael DeJesus (ND). Clinton had runners at second and third with only one out in the inning, but couldn't muster any more offense as DeJesus pitched out of the jam.
The Dragons and LumberKings continue the four game series with game three Sunday night at Fifth Third Field beginning at 7:00 PM. The Dragons will turn to LHP Alexander Smit, making his Dayton Dragons debut, while Clinton counters with LHP Zach Phillips (9-2, 2.77). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM. All Dragons games are also streamed live on the internet via All In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
