Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
June 29, 2006 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels struck for 3 runs and three hits in the third inning but only managed two more hits the rest of the game as they fell to Dayton, 4-3, in front of a 100.7 The Fox Buck-A-Cup Thursday crowd on 2,950 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Flint Wipke hit his seventh triple of the season and second in as many games to score Madison Edwards and Brad Coon. Wipke then scored on a Hainley Statia RBI single to make the score 3-0 Kernels.
But Dayton chipped away at the lead, scoring a single run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth off Kernels starter Andy Hill. Hill pitched six innings and allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out one in a no-decision effort.
The Dragons took the lead in the top of the 7th off reliever Daniel Hawkins (0-1) as Mike Griffin's RBI single was the final nail in the Kernels' coffin. Logan Ondrusek (2-2) picked up the win and Justin Mallett earned his second save.
Game two of this four game series with the Dragon takes place Friday night at 7:00 pm as Robert Mosebach (4-4) starts for the Kernels against Daniel Guerrero (0-0). The first 1,000 fans through the gates get a free Kernels cap from IOS Office Solutions. Gates open at 6:00 pm. The Kernels continue to collect non-perishable food items as part of âFreedom for Hunger' through July 2nd. The goal is to raise 30 tons of food for local food banks in the community and fans that make food donations at the game can win one of three nightly prizes.
