Lugnuts hold on for victory

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts survived a pair of late rallies as they defeated the Clinton LumberKings 3-2 before 6,927 fans at Oldsmobile Park Thursday night. It is the first time that the Lugnuts have won consecutive games in two weeks.

Lansing led the game 3-0 in the eighth inning when Ian Gac smoked a two run homer to left-center field to cut the lead to 3-2. K.C. Herren then singled and moved to second base on a wild pitch, but was stranded there when Edward Rodriguez fanned Brian Valechka.

Clinton put runners at the corners with two away in the ninth inning, but John Mayberry struck out on a 3-2 slider to end the game, as Rodriguez picked up his first save of the season.

Lansing jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Joey Metropoulos smacked a solo homer to left field.

Lansing added two more runs in the third inning when Brian Bormaster drew a bases loaded walk to plate Luke Hetherington, which made the game 2-0. Metropoulos then added an RBI groundout to push across Lansing's final run of the game.

Adrian Martin (3-0) got the win for Lansing, throwing five innings and scattering three hits.

Jacob Ranser (4-9) took the loss for the LumberKings, tossing five frames and allwoing three runs on as many hits.

Lansing (44-31, 4-4) and Clinton (27-50, 4-4) will play game two of the series Friday evening. It will be an Auto-Owner's Insurance Figurine Giveaway featuring Corey Patterson. The first 2,500 fans will receive the collectable figurines. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
