South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - It appears the breaks are beginning to go the way of the South Bend Silver Hawks. During the season's the first half, it seemed as though timely hits were far from the norm and kicking the ball around any Midwest League Stadium was par for the course. Thursday night, the Hawks took another step to move in the right direction, getting a third straight quality start from Cody Evans and a bases loaded extra innings RBI from Manny Ferrer with an eleven inning 3-2 victory over the Swing of the Quad Cities.
Pedro Ciriaco opened the inning with a double to center and reached third on Leyson Septimo's sacrifice bunt. Justin Upton put the Hawks on the board with an RBI single to left and with two out came all the way around to score on Ricardo Sosa's double into the left field corner to put the Hawks up 2-0.
The story Thursday night should have been Cody Evans. He started the contest retiring the first nine batters he faced, as well as 16-of the first-17 Swing hitters. Evans allowed just one hit through five innings and one run over his eight inning stint, a seventh inning home run to Colby Rasmus.
The Swing (38-38, 4-4) tied the game in the ninth on an RBI double by Rasmus, that missed being his second home run of the game and 12th of the season by inches at the right center field wall.
The game remained tied into the 11th. In the home half of the frame, Trey Hendricks led off with a walk and left the game when Greg Thomson was put in as a pinch runner. Thomson stole second and Will Crouch was able to reach on a free pass. Frank Curreri then followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt and reached when Swing third baseman Daniel Nelson mishandled the bunt allowing all players to advance safely. Manny Ferrer then placed a bloop single down the right field line to score Thomson with the winning run.
Reliever Ryan Doherty (5-0) came out of the Silver Hawks pen throwing an inning of relief to grab the win.
The Silver Hawks (39-35, 6-2) continue their four game set against the Swing of the Quad Cities Friday night with first pitch slated for 7 PM. Friday, the Cove welcomes AM 960 Weekday Sports Beat, as Darin Pritchett and Rick Carter broadcast live from the Budweiser Bullpen Bar and Grille.
