Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels ended their seven game road trip to open the second half of the season with a 3-2 loss at Burlington on Wednesday night. Burlington scored 3 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning after the Kernels had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh.
Kernels starter Stephen Marek received a no-decision as he threw seven innings of three hit baseball. Marek allowed one run and walked three while striking out three.
Cody Harkcom (2-1) got the win in relief as Kraig Schambough picked up his 7th save. Tim Didjurgis (0-5) took the loss in relief.
Flint Wipke, Dallas Morris and Larry Infante each had two hits for the Kernels. Marco Albanao drove in one of the Kernels runs on an RBI single scoring Morris. Then, Albano should have been out stealing second base, but Bees first baseman Miguel Vega muffed the catch for an error, allowing Stantrel Smith to score from third.
The Kernels had a chance to add to their lead in the top of the eighth as Flint Wipke tripled. With Hainley Statia at first and Mark Trumbo at the plate, Wipke was caught in a rundown trying to steal home. Statia advanced to third on the play, but Trumbo popped out to end the inning.
The Bees took the lead in the 8th with back to back singles and a muffed sacrifice bunt play by the Kernels defense. Miguel Vega singled to make the score 2-1, and then Chris McConnell singled deep to short off Didjurgis, scoring the game winning runs.
The Kernels return home to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday to open an eight game home series with Dayton and Burlington. Game time on Thursday night is 7 pm with the gates opening at 6 pm.
