Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars trailed the Beloit Snappers 9-1 on Thursday night at Elfstrom Stadium entering the bottom of the ninth inning and rallied for five runs in that frame before Anthony Recker just missed winning the game with a grand slam. Instead his deep drive became the final out of a 9-6 loss in front of 6,495 fans.

The Snappers put together three runs in the third against Cougars starter Trey Shields, as eight batters came to the plate. The Cougars' first tally arrived in the bottom half when Justin Sellers poked an infield single off Oswaldo Sosa that led to a throwing error, allowing Steve Kleen to score after his double.

Beloit smacked three home runs in the fifth inning for a 7-1 game. Shields, who pitched less than six innings for the first time since mid-May, allowed the first one to Erik Lis and left afterward. Randy Rapp entered and served up a pair of solo shots to break open the game. After the Snappers added two runs off Joe Newby in the top of the ninth, the Cougars began their uprising, all of which came with two outs. Raul Padron singled off Frank Mata to score Jose Pineda and went to second on an error that sent Kleen to third. Toddric Johnson, making his Cougars debut, reached on a soft single behind the mound to cut it to 9-3.

Justin Sellers walked to load the bases, and Yohan Pino relieved Mata. Isaac Omura reached on an error, Chad Boyd singled home a run and Jeff Baisley walked with the bases full to cut it to 9-6. Recker blasted a pitch to deep center field that Edward Ovalle caught on the warning track to end the game.

Sosa (6-5) got the win, and Shields (6-8) took the defeat. The Cougars (4-4), who have never been under .500 this season, face the Snappers (5-3) again Friday night at 6:30 CDT. Vince Mazzaro (7-5, 4.44) is scheduled to deal against Ryan Mullins (1-3, 4.42).
