Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
June 23, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped the first game of a four game series, 4-2, to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in 15 innings on Monday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Kernels took an early 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Efren Navarro and Chris Rosenbaum, but those would be the last runs the Kernels would score in the game. Julio Perez went 3-6 with a double and Andrew Romine was 2 for 7 with two stolen bases as the Kernels had nine hits in the game.
Kernels starter Jordan Walden allowed three hits over five scoreless innings, with a walk and four strikeouts in a no-decision effort. Reliever Chris Armstrong was the tough-luck loser, giving up two runs on three hits over three innings, with three walks and four strikeouts. A.J. Ford, Cephas Howard and Eddie McKiernan combined to pitch 6.1 innings of scoreless relief with only one hit and five strikeouts.
Both teams had several opportunities in extra innings to score but it was a combination of three Wisconsin hits and two passed balls that led to the Timber Rattlers scoring the eventual game winning runs in the top of the 15th inning. Juan Diaz was 3 for 7 and Alex Liddi was 3 for 6 with an RBI for Wisconsin. Reliever Jose Escalona (2-0) picked up the win and Justin Sousa notched his fourth save of the season.
