Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN---What a difference a change of scenery can make.
After being swept in a four-game series on the road in the state capital of Michigan by the Lansing Lugnuts over the past four days, the Fort Wayne Wizards returned to the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium on Monday night.
Taking advantage of 11 base hits, 11 walks, and three West Michigan errors, Fort Wayne snapped a four-game losing streak by not only beating the Whitecaps, but also shutting them out in the process, by a score of 7-0, in a game played in front of 3,852 fans.
The Wizards jumped on West Michigan starting pitcher Brandon Hamilton in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs on a triple by Justin Baum and another run on an RBI-single by Yefri Carvajal, in taking a 3-0 lead.
They took advantage of an error by Whitecap second baseman Justin Henry, a walk issued to B.J. Dubarry, and a single off the bat of Drew Cumberland in scoring another run in the bottom of the second inning in upping their lead to 4-0.
Baum drove in his third run of the game in the fourth inning, when his 18th double of the season brought in Cumberland (who walked, stole his second base of the game, and moved over to third base on a throwing error charged to West Michigan catcher Alex Avila), making the score 5-0 in favor of the home team.
Singles by Cumberland and Brad Chalk sandwiched around walks issued to Baum and Felix Carrasco produced another Fort Wayne run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Wizards would score one more time in the bottom of the eighth, when Andy Parrino doubled to centerfield, moved over to third base on an infield ground out, then touched home plate on a passed ball.
While Fort Wayne was scoring runs seemingly at will, such was not the case for the Whitecaps.
Wizard starting pitcher Matt Teague kept West Michigan off the scoreboard, scattering four hits while walking one and striking out two in six innings of work.
The trio of Colt Hynes, Bryan Oland, and Jackson Quezada combined to blank the Whitecaps over the final three frames, each hurling a scoreless inning of relief.
Teague (6-4) picked up the win, while Hamilton (0-5), who gave up four runs on five hits, walked seven, and fanned one in his three innings of work, suffered the loss.
The win by Fort Wayne snapped a four-game losing streak, and improved their record at home to 22-15, the third-best among all Midwest League teams (Clinton at 22-14 and Lansing at 24-16 have a better record) in games played at home.
The Wizards will try to make it two wins in a row over West Michigan when the two teams meet again on Tuesday night.
Right-handers Jeremy McBryde (1-5, 4.84) of Fort Wayne and Paul Nardozzi (3-2, 2.39) of the Whitecaps are scheduled to be the starting pitchers. The game can be heard on both the radio (ESPN Radio 1380) and the Internet (www.fortwaynewizards.com), beginning with the Hupe Insurance Services Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m. (EDT).
