Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Derrick Walker drilled a three-run home run in the first inning and the South Bend Silver Hawks held off a late comeback bid by the Dayton Dragons for the second straight night, topping the Dragons 7-5. The loss was the Dragons' third straight and dropped their second half record to 3-3.

South Bend scored four runs in the first inning against Dragons starter Kyle Lotzkar (0-2). The 18-year-old former Reds first round draft pick allowed the Walker home run with two outs in the inning after a Dayton error prolonged the frame. Three of the four runs in the inning were unearned against Lotzkar.

After Dayton got on the board on a run-scoring single by Denis Phipps in the fourth inning, the Silver Hawks took a commanding lead with three more runs in the seventh, getting three doubles in the inning against Dragons reliever Tyler Rhoden, to go ahead 7-1.

The Dragons scored four times in the eighth to make things interesting. Zack Cozart doubled with one out and Brandon Waring followed with a long home run to left-center field, his 15th of the year, to make it 7-3. One batter later, Brandon Menchaca singled to left and Michael McKennon reached on a two-base error. Jason Bour followed with a two-run single to left to make it 7-5.

But the Dragons did not see another man reach base as they fell to the Silver Hawks for the eighth time in nine meetings this season.

The Dragons host South Bend on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. (WING 1410 AM). Josh Ravin (2-3, 5.00) will start for the Dragons.

Notes: Cozart and Waring each extended hitting streaks to 10 straight for Dayton, two short of the team's 2008 high of 12 by Denis Phipps...Menchaca extended his hitting streak to six straight...New Dragons reliever Zach Stewart, drafted in the third round earlier this month by the Reds, provided his second straight perfect outing. His pitched two scoreless innings and has retired all 12 batters he has faced as a professional.
