Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING - For the first time this season, a team has swept the Midwest League's weekly awards. Matt Liuzza and Luis Perez took home the top honors for last week after dominating performances to start the second have.

Liuzza, 24, shared the Midwest League Hitter of the Week award with Dayton's Brandon Menchaca. The Lugnuts catcher earned the honor after going 6-for-11 following the All-Star Break with a homer and five RBI. The week continued his torrid June, as he has mashed his way through the Midwest League since the calendar turned. Liuzza ended the week hitting .377 this month with five home runs and 20 RBI.

The award is the first for Liuzza, who is in his second year with the Lugnuts. He also became the second Lugnuts player to win the award this year. Manny Rodriguez won it during the first week of April.

Perez, 23, took home the top honor as the Pitcher of the Week after earning his third win of the season last Thursday night against Fort Wayne. He tossed a season-high seven innings and allowed just four hits in a 4-0 shutout of the Wizards at Oldsmobile Park. Perez also struck out nine batters in the start, which was his fifth quality start in his last six outings.

Perez is also the second Lansing hurler to take home the award this season. Former Lugnut Nate Starner was named the league's top pitcher the week of April 21-27.

The awards are handed out weekly by Midwest League president George Spelius.
