Kernels Clinch Playoff Berth with 2-1 Win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Cedar Rapids secured a first half playoff spot out of the Midwest League West with a 2-1 victory over the Burlington Bees on Tuesday night. The Kernels scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of back-to-back two out bases loaded walks.

The Kernels will play in September's postseason for the third consecutive season as a Minnesota Twins affiliate under manager Jake Mauer.

Luke Bard (4-0) earned the win for the Kernels. Bard allowed three hits and struck out one in one inning of relief. Trevor Hildenberger (7) earned the save with a scoreless top of the ninth.

Justin Anderson (4-4) suffered the loss for Burlington. Anderson allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out a pair in 7 2/3 innings pitched. Eduardo Paredes (3) blew the save. Paredes yielded a pair of walks in 1/3 of an inning.

Felix Jorge recorded a no-decision for Cedar Rapids. Jorge yielded one run on three hits and a walk while striking out five in seven innings pitched. Tanner English led Cedar Rapids with two hits and an RBI.

Burlington (33-31) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third on Wade Wass's leadoff home run to left field. Wass's home run was the first hit of the ball game and his third home run of the year.

Cedar Rapids (39-26) went in front of Burlington, 2-1, with a pair of two out runs in the bottom of the eighth. Jorge Fernandez led off the inning with a single to right. Two batters later, T.J. White drew a one-out walk, giving the Kernels runners on first and second. Brian Navarreto followed White with a single through the left side, loading the bases for Cedar Rapids. The single for Navarreto also extended his hitting streak to seven games. Two batters later, Tanner English tied the game at 1-1 with a two-out RBI bases loaded walk, bringing in Fernandez. Nick Gordon gave the Kernels a 2-1 lead with an RBI bases loaded walk, scoring White.

The Kernels resume their nine-game homestand tomorrow evening against the Burlington Bees. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. from Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Cedar Rapids has yet to announce their starting pitcher on Wednesday while RHP Michael Bolaski (4-5, 4.22) gets the start for Burlington.
