South Bend, Ind.-The Dayton Dragons broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the eighth inning and went on to defeat the South Bend Cubs 3-1 on Tuesday night. The win was the Dragons fourth straight and improved their record to 35-30.

The win lifted the Dragons to within two games of the wildcard slot with five games to play in the first half race. Great Lakes leads the wildcard with Bowling Green only percentage points behind them.

The Dragons would earn a first half playoff berth if they win their final five games while Great Lakes and Bowling Green each go no better than 2-3 in their final five.

With the score tied 1-1, Ronald Bueno led off the Dragons eighth inning with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on Luis Gonzalez's sacrifice. Paul Kronenfeld struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but when South Bend catcher Gioskar Amaya threw to first base to complete the out, Bueno broke for the plate. The return throw home was on target, but Bueno's head first slide around Amaya's tag brought a "safe" call from plate umpire Richard Genera to give the lead. South Bend manager Jimmy Gonzalez raced out of the dugout, aggressively argued the call, and was ejected from the game. Brian O'Grady restarted the rally with a base hit, stole second, and scored on Avain Rachal's two-out single to make it 3-1.

Jake Paulson (1-2) worked two scoreless innings to earn his first win. Conor Krauss pitched the ninth. He allowed a one-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but got Jesse Hodges to line to Bueno at third base into a game-ending double play as Krauss picked up his third save.

Dragons starting pitcher Junior Morillo worked the first six innings and pitched well. He allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and no strikeouts. He allowed only two runners past first base.

The Dragons did not have a hit over the first four and two-thirds innings. They finished with seven hits. Bueno went 2 for 3 with a double, two walks, and two runs scored. Garrett Boulware also had two hits for Dayton.

The Dragons (35-30) battle South Bend (27-35) again on Wednesday night at 7:05 in the second game of the series. Tejay Antone (3-6, 2.75) will start for the Dragons against South Bend's Trevor Clifton (2-5, 4.67).
