Lake County Captains News Release
(Midland, MI) -The Lake County Captains saw their six game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night at Dow Diamond. The Captains battled back to tie the game in the seventh inning after trailing 2-0. The Captains would be unable to get the go ahead run on the board though as the Great Lakes Loons would take advantage of three Captains' error to secure a walk off 3-2 win.
Great Lakes took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Jimmy Allen doubled to leftfield. With two outs Cristian Gomez drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Federico Celli followed with a double to leftfield to score both Allen and Gomez for a 2-0 Loons lead.
The Captains would cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth inning. Taylor Murphy started the inning by drawing a walk. Yonathan Mendoza would follow with a single. Francisco Mejia would move both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Bobby Ison would then bounce into a fielder's choice to score Murphy from third to cut the Loons's lead to 2-1.
In the top of the seventh inning the Captains would pull even. Again it was Murphy drawing the leadoff walk. Mendoza would follow with a walk as well. Mejia would once again move the runners with a sacrifice bunt. A wide throw to third on the bunt would allow all runners to reach. After a shallow fly out, Greg Allen would lift a fly ball to rightfield. Murphy tagging from third was able to score, tying the game at 2.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, Gomez reached on an infield single. Celli would follow with a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Kelvin Ramos would then single to leftfield to send Gomez to third. On the play, Ordomar Valdez attempted throw to second to get Ramos trying to advance. The throw was wide of the bag and bounced into the rightfield bullpen for a throwing error. The error allowed Gomez to score the game winning run.
Anderson Polanco started and went 5.0 innings. He allowed 2 runs, both earned, on 5 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 6. Luke Eubank would follow with an inning of relief. Eubank did not allow a hit or a run and he struck out 1. David Speer (2-4) would take the loss in 2.2 innings. He allowed 1 run, unearned, on 3 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 4.
The Captains will look to stay alive in the playoff race on Wednesday night when they continue their series with the Loons at 7:05pm. Thomas Pannone (3-1) will get the start for the Captains. Catch all the action on 1330AM WINT.
