West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Sloppy defense and a dominant performance by Spencer Turnbull helped the West Michigan Whitecaps defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 7-1 Tuesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Whitecaps opened the scoring when Mike Gerber scored on Ross Kivett's first-inning double, then Gerber drove in a run with a groundout in the third. Later in the inning; Rashad Brown, who was re-added to the active roster before the ballgame, scored on a wild pitch by Fort Wayne starting pitcher Dinelson Lamet. Kivett added a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Brown added an RBI-single in a two-run sixth to give West Michigan a 6-0 advantage. After Nick Torres drove in a run for Fort Wayne in the seventh, TinCaps first baseman Trae Santos fired a wild throw to third base attempting to pick off Kivett. The throw sailed wide of the bag, allowing Kivett to score. The error was the fifth Fort Wayne miscue of the night, tying the most a Whitecaps opponent has allowed this year.
Turnbull (5-2) earned his fifth win of 2015 thanks to pitching 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Lamet (2-4) gave up four runs over the five innings while suffering the loss despite nine strikeouts of West Michigan hitters. The Whitecaps improve to 31-33, while the TinCaps fall to 28-35 on the season.
SCHOTTS SUSPENDED
Whitecaps outfielder Austin Schotts has been suspended three games for actions relating to his ejection from the Whitecaps 4-2 loss against Cedar Rapids on June 8. He began serving the suspension Tuesday, and will miss the entire three-game series against Fort Wayne.
