Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - Cedar Rapids scores four runs in the fourth inning, then five runs in the fifth after a 2:50 rain delay to race past South Bend 14-2 in the series finale Sunday afternoon.

After an eight-run loss a night ago, it was the Cedar Rapids offense that came out swinging on Sunday. After a scoreless first inning, Noah Miller and Misael Urbina notched back-to-back singles to put two on with one out in the second. Jose Salas then reached on an error which scored Miller, then both Urbina and Salas scored on another error, making it 3-0 after two innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, the offense continued. Miller and Urbina again reached to begin the inning, then Salas crushed his second home run of the season, his first in Cedar Rapids, doubling the Kernels' lead to 6-0. The next batter, Andrew Cossetti, then belted a ball over the wall to left as Cedar Rapids went back-to-back for the second day in a row, this time to go up 7-0.

Then, with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the rain came. The game was put on pause for two hours and fifty minutes, but that did not slow down the Cedar Rapids offense. After the delay, John Stankiewicz pitched a scoreless top of the fifth, and in the bottom half, the Kernels opened the floodgates themselves. A walk and a single opened up the inning, then a Miller RBI double scored a run to make it 8-0. With runners now on second and third, Urbina produced his third hit of the night, this one scoring both runners to make it 10-0. After another single, Kyler Fedko drove in a run with a single of his own, and so did Tanner Schobel to grow the lead to 12-0 after five full innings.

South Bend got on the board in the seventh. Following a one-out single, Fabian Pertuz crushed a two-run home run giving the Cubs their lone runs of the contest.

Cedar Rapids added two more in their half of the seventh; Cossetti and Fedko walked with one out, then a ground out, and a single scored the pair setting the tally at 14-2, which would be the final.

With the win, the Kernels (37-26) take five of the six games against the Cubs (29-33), the most wins for Cedar Rapids in a series this season. The back half of the Kernels' twelve-game homestand is Tuesday at 6:35 as the Beloit Sky Carp make the trip to CR for the first and only time in 2023.
