Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Burlington Bees behind excellent pitching and 12 hits from the offense. Eswarlin Jimenez (3-4) went five innings for the win in his first start since June 11 when he exited with an injury. On this night, Jimenez held the Bees scoreless and scattered five hits while striking out three and walking one.
The Kernels picked up the first run of the game in the 3rd inning. Chevy Clarke walked and later came home on a RBI groundout by Alex Yarbrough, giving Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead. In the 4th inning the Kernels doubled their lead to 2-0 on a RBI single by Abel Baker to center that scored Zach Borenstein.
In the 5th inning the Kernels scored twice to double the lead again, taking a 4-0 lead. Chevy Clarke led off with a home run to left field. Kevin Moesquit followed with a single, went to 2nd base on a balk by Bees starter Raul Alcantara, and reached 3rd base on an errant pickoff by Alcantara. Andy Workman's RBI single plated Moesquit.
Gary Mitchell's 3-run home run in the 7th inning pushed the Kernels lead to 7-0. It was Mitchell's team-leading 10th home run of the season and his 2nd home run in two games. The Kernels extended the lead to 8-0 with Alex Yarbrough's RBI single in the 8th inning. It scored Abel Baker, who had singled to begin the frame.
The offensive outburst was more than enough for Jimenez and the Kernels bullpen. R.J. Alvarez dominated for two scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out three and walking one. Stephen Tromblee added a scoreless 8th inning. Carmine Giardina pitched one inning and allowed a 2-out RBI single by Nick Rickles in the 9th inning, the only run for the Bees.
Raul Alcantara (4-7) suffered the loss for Burlington, going 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked three. David Mota pitched 1.2 scoreless innings. Chas Mye allowed three runs over one inning, and Jonathan Joseph gave up one run over one inning.
