Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Using a five-run tenth inning, the Peoria Chiefs dispatched the Clinton LumberKings, 7-2 on Tuesday night at Ashford University Field.
Clinton was first to score as Ji-Man Choi hit a solo blast into the Lumber Lounge with two outs in the first. They picked up another run in the second when Mario Yepez delivered a two-out, run-scoring base hit to score Jabari Blash who led off the inning with a triple.
Mayekol Guaipe gave the LumberKings a great debut on the mound as the game stayed 2-0 into the sixth inning. Pin-Chieh Chen was at the plate after Oliver Zapata led off the inning with a single. Chen hit a groundball up the first base line that appeared foul, but was called fair by home plate umpire Mike Huus. As the ball kicked around in the right field corner, Zapata scored and Chen slid safely into third but the ball got away from Ramon Morla at home and Chen scored on the throwing error.
With the game tied 2-2 entering the top of the tenth inning, Josh Corrales coughed up five runs but didn't get much help from his defense as Morla committed his second error of the night at a pivotal point in the game. After catcher Sergio Burruel singled to start the inning, Zapata laid a bunt down between home plate and the pitchers mound but Morla couldn't pick the ball clean and both runners were safe. Finally the LumberKings took the out they were given when Chen dropped down a successful sacrifice bunt that moved the runners to second and third. Clinton elected to walk Zeke DeVoss intentionally to load the bases. Taiwan Easterling hit a 0-2 pitch into center field for a sacrifice fly and a 3-2 lead.
Dustin Gieger followed with a run-scoring single and Paul Hoilman hit a two-run double off the left field wall. When the damage was done, Peoria scored five times in the frame. Clinton got a two-out walk from Anthony Phillips in the bottom half of the inning but did nothing with it and dropped their fourth straight game.
The two teams meet tomorrow night at Ashford University Field as the LumberKings try to avoid the three-game sweep. Clinton sends right-hander Trevor Miller (4-5, 3.66) to the mound and Peoria counters with right-hander Jose Rosario (6-6, 4.25). Fans in attendance will receive the Mediacom and McDonald's card strip number three. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
