Captains Conquer Dragons 5-2 in 12 Innings

(Dayton, OH) - Jordan Smith's bases loaded single broke a 2-2 tie in the 12th inning as the Lake County Captains (3-2, 34-40) defeated the Dayton Dragons (0-5, 30-45) by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field. The Captains batted around in the 12th inning and just had the one hit. Lake County took advantage of three walks, a hit batter and an error by Dayton in the inning to plate the three runs. The Captains won 5-2. Lake County improves to 5-3 in extra innings this season.

Dayton scored right out of the gate in the opening frame. In the first inning, Juan Perez connected for his solo homer and the Dragons led 1-0. The homerun was the second of the season for Perez.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Nick O'Shea connected for his first homerun of the season and the Dragons led the game 2-0 after seven.

Lake County tied the game in the ninth inning. With one out, Jordan Smith singled on the infield, and then motored to third on Alex Monsalve's 16th double of the season. Jerrud Sabourin grounded out to the pitcher and there were two outs. Bryson Myles hit a two out two run double to right center field and Alex Monsalve scored on the heels of Jordan Smith and the game was tied at 2-2 heading to extra innings.

LHP Shawn Morimando (2-1) took to the mound for Lake County. Morimando got the no decision the loss but twirled six innings allowing just four hits and one earned run. Shawn walked four and struck out one. Morimando allowed the homer to Juan Perez. Antwonie Hubbard relieved Morimando and pitched two innings, allowing a solo homer to O'Shea that was the only hit he allowed Hubbard walked two and struck out one. Manny Carmona came on in the ninth inning and pitch two and one thirds innings allowing one hit and one walk and one strikeout. Jeff Johnson (4-3) got the win after pitching one and two thirds innings of hitless baseball. Johnson fanned two during his outing.

RHP Stalin Gerson (3-5) started the game for Dayton and did not get a decision. Gerson pitched six shutout innings and allowed two hits, he walked one and struck out three. Ryan Kemp pitched a perfect seventh inning, and Carlos Contreras pitched a perfect eighth inning, but in the ninth inning, Contreras gave up two runs to the Captains and that tied the ballgame. Erick Miller (0-2) entered in the tenth, and pitched two plus innings and took the loss. Miller left with the bases loaded in the 12th inning and all three runs came around to score. Cole Green was the man who entered in the 12th he gave up one hit and walked two.

The Captains will conclude the six game road trip Wednesday night in Dayton, Ohio vs. the Dragons. Lake County will send RHP Felix Sterling (3-6, 5.63) to the hill. The Dragons have not announced who will get the start. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
