Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A pair of four-run innings propelled the Cedar Rapids Kernels to bounce back from Saturday's night blowout and defeat the Kane County Cougars, 8-4, on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Cedar Rapids (38-23) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second but not before the Cougars (28-32) took the initial advantage in the top of the first. Bijan Rademacher started the contest with an infield single and scored on a two-bagger off the bat of Dan Vogelbach.
Dillon Maples had trouble throwing strikes as he walked seven batters in just two innings, five of those free passes came in the second. Michael Quesada cashed in two of them with a double to score Adam Brett Walker and Tyler Grimes. Quesada crossed the plate after a bases loaded walk to JD Williams. Jorge Polanco also picked up a run batted in to put the Kernels up by three.
Hudson Boyd couldn't maintain the lead as he surrendered a solo homer to Marco Hernandez, beginning the fourth inning. In the fifth, Albert Almora singled and scored on a home run from Vogelbach to make it a 4-4 contest.
Felix Pena (0-1) took over on the mound in the bottom of the fifth and allowed the Kernels to retake the lead. Walker cracked a leadoff double to right-center and scored on another two-base hit from Quesada. Byron Buxton gave the Kernels some insurance with a two-run double to left-center before scoring on a Williams single. Steven Gruver (3-1) held the Cougars hitless during his four shutout frames out of the Kernels' bullpen. Tyler Jones hung a zero in the ninth.
The Cougars and Kernels wrap up their three-game series on Monday afternoon at 12:05 from Veterans Memorial Stadium. Right-hander Pierce Johnson (4-4) starts for the Cougars against lefty Mason Melotakis (5-2). The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night against the Burlington Bees at 6:30.
