Burlington Bees News Release
The Beloit Snappers edged the Burlington Bees by one run in both games of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Community Field.
One-run games have not been kind to the Bees (23-35) and that continued on Sunday, as the Snappers (38-25) found a way to pick up wins in two different ways.
In game one of the doubleheader, Burlington fell behind earlier, because Reid Scoggins (1-4) allowed five runs in his 3.1 innings. Beloit got three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to pull ahead 5-0. John Wooten had two RBIs, while he also joined Brett Vertigan, Daniel Robertson and Renato Nunez in picking up two hits.
Kurt Spomer delivered 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to help the Bees get back in to the contest. Burlington scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth to pull within three runs going into the last of the seventh. Wendell Soto led off the inning with a home run off of Ryan Dull. Michael Bolaski doubled home Wade Hinkle, but Chevy Clarke struck out looking to end the game.
In game two, the Bees trailed again after Joey Krehbiel walked three batters and allowed two hits in the first, which led to two runs. However, the Bees wasted no time pulling ahead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Hinkle and two-run home run from Andrew Ray.
The Bees added three more runs in the fourth on Anthony Bemboom's third home run of the season.
On the mound, Joey Krehbiel made his first start since 2011, and after allowing two runs in the first, settled down to throw three scoreless innings. Robbie Powell came in with a 7-2 lead and surrendered back-to-back home runs to Matt Olson and John Wooten to make it a three-run game.
The Bees 7-4 lead held until the seventh, when Jairo Diaz entered and walked the bases loaded. Diaz was pulled with no outs, and Garrett Baker came in and allowed a grand slam to Renato Nunez.
Tucker Healy fired a scoreless ninth to give the Snappers the sweep of the doubleheader.
Brandon Love will take the mound on Monday night to try and help the Bees avoid a four--game sweep. Dakota Bacus will make the start for Beloit, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Community Field.
