Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - Jake Westbrook tossed seven shutout innings in his rehab start with the Peoria Chiefs to lead the squad to a 9-1 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Sunday. The Chiefs bumped their record to 33-27 and are three and one-half games behind Beloit for the final Western Division playoff spot.
Westbrook retired the first 14 River Bandits he faced and overall allowed one run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out five and did not issue a walk while throwing 76 pitches, 53 for strikes. Westbrook got eight groundouts and three strikeouts in his first 11 batters faced before a foul pop up ended the fourth. He induced two more groundouts to start the fifth before allowing a single, double and a run. All told Westbrook struck out five, got 14 groundball outs, picked a runner off first and just one out in the air.
The Chiefs scored early against Juan Minaya to support Westbrook. With one out Ildemaro Vargas reached on an error and scored on a Jacob Wilson double to right. Jordan Walton doubled to right to plate Wilson, putting the Chiefs up 2-0 after the first frame.
Peoria expanded their lead in the third inning. Breyvic Valrea singled to left field to lead off the frame and moved to second on a Vargas ground out. Wilson singled to right to move Valera to third, and he scored as Walton grounded in to a force out at second extending the Chiefs lead to 3-0.
The Chiefs scored another run in the fourth inning, this one via the long ball. Jeremy Schaffer led off the inning with a home run to left field, making the score 4-0 with his first homer in a Chiefs uniform.
Quad Cities finally got on the board in the fifth inning. With two outs Brian Blasik broke up Westbrook's perfect game with a single to left field. Ariel Ovando doubled to plate Blasik cutting the Chiefs lead to 4-1 before Westbrook got Jobduan Morales to ground out to end the inning.
The Chiefs got that run back in the bottom of the frame after Wilson walked with two outs. Walton singled to move Wilson over to second, and Patrick Wisdom's 12th double of the year scored Wilson to give the Chiefs a 5-1 lead. Walton was thrown out at home trying to score from first on the two-bagger to end the inning.
The Chiefs slammed the door on the River Bandits in the eighth inning. Jeremy Schaffer led off the inning with his second home run of the game to left. After Gerwuins Velazco and Nick Martini both singled, Valera tripled to right to plate both of his teammates. Valera came around to score as Blasik overthrew third giving the Chiefs a 9-1 lead.
Westbrook (1-0) gave up one run on four hits and no walks while striking out five. Thomas Lee tossed two scoreless innings while striking out three in relief.
