Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons (22-40) scored double-digit runs for the third game in a row and picked up their fourth consecutive win with an 11-0 victory over the first place South Bend Silver Hawks (42-19) on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond.
Great Lakes right fielder Jeremy Rathjen led the way from the seventh spot in the order, going 4-for-5 with six runs batted in, which tied the all-time Loons record for most RBI by one player in a single game.
"It helps when your teammates have good at-bats because it breathes some confidence throughout the team," Rathjen said. "It also puts some pressure on the other team's pitchers. That's one of the reasons it's so contagious. When you're having good at-bats, it makes the pitcher work, which forces him to make some mistakes."
"Nobody has worked harder than Jeremy Rathjen and Mike Eylward," Loons manager Razor Shines added. "For Rathjen to get four hits and drive in six runs, and the team to score 11 runs, he needs to get some credit, and so does Mike for the work he's done with these guys. These guys work every day. We're excited that these things are happening."
For the first time in their current win streak, the Loons did not get any runs in the first inning, but put five runs on the board in the second. Tyler Ogle and Corey Seager both scored on a Rathjen single. Rathjen scored on a double from Leo Rodriguez, who was 2-for-4. Rodriguez and James Baldwin each scored on a Robbie Garvey single.
The Loons extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the third. Ogle scored on a Seager double and Seager scored on a Rathjen single. Seager was 2-for-2 on the day and Ogle was 2-for-4, with a walk, a double and three runs scored.
"We've been waiting for this kind of output all season," Ogle said. "You say it's contagious, but it just needed to happen. For us to do this, it's what we've expected to happen from game one. Even though it's two months into the season, we're going to roll with this thing and keep it going."
Jesse Darrah (6-4) started and took the loss for the Silver Hawks, giving up seven runs on 12 hits. Darrah walked three and struck out two.
Miguel Sulbaran (3-2) started for the Loons and threw five shutout innings to receive credit for the win, giving up only three hits. The 19-year-old Sulbaran struck out four and walked two.
"I was able to have some success today, specifically with my fastball and changeup, which was nice to see," Sulbaran said. "When I go out there, I just want to get guys out. It's has nothing to do with specific pitches or anything like that. I just want to throw strikes and get guys out."
Great Lakes sealed the win with three runs off Silver Hawks reliever Chris Capper in the home half of the sixth. Jeremy Rathjen's pop-up dropped between three Silver Hawks, giving Rathjen a single and allowing Eric Smith, Ogle and Joe Winker to score. Smith also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double.
Malcolm Holland scored the Loons last run of the game in the eighth inning, coming home because of a throwing error by South Bend second baseman Fidel Pena.
Arismendy Ozoria pitched three scoreless innings in relief for Great Lakes, giving up just one hit, while striking out five and walking one. Luis Meza finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning for the Loons.
The Loons will close out their three-game series with South Bend on Monday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Midwest League All-Star Carlos Frias (4-3, 2.56 ERA) is expected to start for Great Lakes and the projected starter for the Silver Hawks is University of Michigan product Brandon Sinnery (3-2, 2.90), who is also a Midwest League All-Star. It is a Social Media Monday at Dow Diamond on Monday evening.
The Great Lakes Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
